Nordic language models: start with the language, not the leaderboard
Viking and GPT-SW3 offer two entry points into the region’s language technology ecosystem.
Viking 33B was developed by Silo AI and TurkuNLP with training on Finland’s LUMI infrastructure. GPT-SW3 is a language model family developed by AI Sweden with research partners.
These projects make useful case studies when exploring regional language support. Their inclusion here is not a performance ranking, nor a recommendation to deploy a specific version.
Our editorial view: test the exact language and task you need. Inspect model cards, licence conditions and limitations, then evaluate with representative examples before adoption.
